History of BA

The 5th of January 1993, was a historic day in the annals of Beatty Secondary School which started functioning some 40 years ago in Serangoon Road on 6 July 1953. On this day, the long cherished dream of many Beattrites came true – the Beatty Alumni was at last registered as an official forum for all Beattrites by the Registrar of Societies. Many past Beattrites had long talked about and longed for the formation of an “Old Beattrites Association”.

The eventual registration of the Beatty Alumni was the result of the dedication, perseverance and support of a core group of Beattrites and the constant encouragement and support of then Principal, Mr Goh Choon Leng, former principals and teachers, former and current, of Beatty and members of the school advisory committee.

The first meeting of past Beattrites, who were keen to form the past pupils’ association was held on 28 May 1992. They had earlier met at a function given in honour of former principal, Mr Tharam Singh. A Protem Committee of eleven members was formed with the Principal as the Advisor.

The members of this Protem Committee were as follows :

Mr Bob Fang Swee Peng – President
Mr Kenneth Chew Mei Kwang – Vice-President
Mr Roland Chou Geng Siong – Hon. Secretary
Mr Mark Low Cheng Thong – Hon. Treasurer
Mr Liow Keng Teck – Committee Member
Mr Wilson David – Committee Member
Mr David Lim Choon Kang – Committee Member
Mr Heng Joo Chiew – Committee Member
Prof. Loh Hong Sai – Committee Member
Ltc Martin Zhu Pei Qi – Committee Member
Mr George Goh Tiong Yong – Committee Member
Mr Goh Choon Leng – Advisor

With unflinching support from all concerned, the committee immediately took the dual task of working on the writing of a constitution for the organization and contacting other past Beattrites to mobilize support. At the same time, work on the design of a logo for the Beatty Alumni was also initiated.

Numerous meetings were held to achieve the above. Finally, on 19 August 1992, the formal application to register the Beatty Alumni was forwarded to the Registrar of Societies. Meanwhile, work on the finalization of the logo continued. A competition for the logo was organized and various options were explored before the current logo was adopted.

Once official registration of Beatty Alumni was gazetted on 5 January 1993, various other steps were taken to prepare for the official launch of the Alumni. An extensive publicity campaign was launched to reach out to past Beattrites for the official inaugural General Meeting on 8 May 1993. An advertisement was inserted in to the Straits Times on 4 May 1993.

Announcements were also made on Radio Perfect 10 station by courtesy of Beattrite, Florence Lian. Beattrite Brian Miller provided a write up in the New Paper. On 4 May, there were also announcements on SBC’s “Rolling Times” by Beattrite Wilson David. All these spate of activities built up a euphoric atmosphere for the coming historic inaugural Annual General Meeting.
